Walt: Explain the legends of St Patricks

Did you know that there is a story behind St Patrick’s Day. It all started with a man who was called St Patrick. He was born in Britain in 387 A.D. His real name was Maewyn Succat. The name St. Patrick was given by Pope Celestine. Patrick’s parents were in a high Roman family.

When St Patrick was sixteen, he got captured by the Pagan Irish Raiders. Patrick was sold as a slave to the chief in Ireland. Patrick spent his teen years as a shepherd. In those teen years Patrick’s belief in god became stronger. He prayed many times. He saw god in his dreams and he finally decided to escape.

He returned home. He also considered himself as an Irish because thats where he found out about god. He wanted to become a priest. He wanted to spread the word to everybody in Ireland about christianity.

In 432 A.D he discovered bishop from Pope Celestine. He was named “Patritius” or “Patricius”  which means father of the people.

There are many legends linked to St Patricks. There is Demon- lake, Snakes and Druids.

As time went by the people discovered the shamrock which is also called the three leaf clover. People in Ireland always wear the shamrock on St Patricks day. If you don’t wear green on St Patricks day you will get pinched.

St Patricks died on the 17th of March 461 A.D  at the age of seventy six. He was buried at Downpatrick, County Down.

Kia Orana Yazmin, I like how you have named the legends that are linked to St Patrick. I have wrote a story about St Patrick too. We have a lot of things in common. Do you celebrate St Patricks Day?

You have written a lot about St. Patrick. Don't you think that it is weird that he was born on 17th of March and died on the 17th of march. What do you like to do on St. Patricks day.
